Watercolour of a single-track road through a glen at sunset

1 day

A day in Edinburgh

Salisbury Crags in the morning, one whisky visit, and an Old Town bar if you are staying.

Edinburgh can hold a walk, a tour, and an evening without ever finding the car keys. Ambition has limits, even here.

Morning. Holyrood Park, under Salisbury Crags. The summit is a climb. The lower paths are the gentler hour, and they leave you next to the distillery.

The visit. Holyrood on St Leonard’s Lane. One tour covers their gin and their single malt. Port of Leith, on the shore, and Johnnie Walker Princes Street, in the West End, are other mornings. Edinburgh Gin and Pickering’s can wait as well. Book the one you choose. Walk from the Royal Mile, or take the bus.

Evening, if you are staying. The Bow Bar on Victoria Street, or The Devil’s Advocate down Advocate’s Close. The close has stairs, which is very Old Town of it.

One Spa and the Irene Forte Spa are their own afternoons. A robe and a tour in the same day is ambitious, even for Edinburgh.
