Privacy notice

Updated 11 October 2026. What this guide keeps, what the host keeps, and what is sent on when you open a map.

Who is responsible

The Malted Map publishes this guide and is the controller for any personal data described here. The contact is themaltedmap@gmail.com. There is no account, no mailing list, no form, and no file of visitors on a server of ours. themaltedmap.com is the site. themaltedmap.co.uk sends people here, and this notice covers both.

What reaches us

The pages are static files. A search stays in your browser. We do not keep the words you type. If you write to us, we keep the email for as long as the conversation needs, and then it goes.

The host

The site is served by Netlify, a company based in the United States. Like any web server, Netlify receives the ordinary request: your IP address, the browser, the page you asked for, and the page that sent you. Netlify holds that log for a short time to run the service and to spot abuse. Netlify's own notice is at netlify.com/privacy, and its terms carry the safeguards UK law asks for when data is handled outside the UK.

Counting visits

Visits are counted by Netlify Analytics. It works from that server log, on Netlify's side. It puts no script on the page, sets no cookie, and does not store anything on your device. What we see is a total: how many pages were served, which ones, from roughly where, and how people arrived. We cannot see a person in it, and we do not try.

Venue pages and outside links

A button on a place opens that venue's own site. The booking, if there is one, happens there. This guide does not see the form, the payment, or the account you open on their site, and their privacy notice is the one that applies. A plan on the map can also open Google Maps in a new tab. From that point, Google's notice applies. Some venue links may be affiliate links, as the terms describe. They tell the venue which site sent you. They tell us nothing about you.

The map

When a map is on the page, the browser asks OpenFreeMap for the map images. OpenFreeMap serves OpenStreetMap data, and it says it keeps no user database and sets no cookies. The request still carries your IP address, because that is how a browser fetches an image. The lists of places are on the page whether or not the map arrives. The fonts are served from this site, not from Google.

Cookies

The site itself sets no cookie and uses no local storage to remember you. Netlify Analytics sets none either. The cookies page is the full list. Google AdSense is the advertising tool chosen for later. Its tag is not on the site until that account is connected, so there is no consent message to show yet.

Adverts

Spaces marked Advertisement are for travel and things to do. Alcohol adverts are refused. Walks, family days, and a round of golf do not carry a tasting offer. Google AdSense is not connected yet. When it is, this notice and the cookies page will say so, and Google's consent message will ask first. Google Analytics is not in use. Google may process that data outside the UK. The safeguards are in Google's privacy policy.

Why this is allowed

UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply. Serving the page you asked for, keeping the host's short log, fetching the map that page includes, and counting visits from that log without touching your device are our legitimate interest in running the guide. An advert that stores a cookie, once connected, relies on your consent.

How long

We hold no personal record to delete. The server log belongs to Netlify and is kept for the short period its notice describes. Analytics totals are kept as totals, which is to say without you in them.

Children

The guide describes visits to distilleries and breweries, so it is written for adults. It collects no data from anyone, of any age.

Your rights

You can ask for access, correction, erasure, restriction, or to object, and you can withdraw consent at any time. Because there is no account, there is usually nothing held to send. Write to themaltedmap@gmail.com, and you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Changes

If the tools change, this page changes, and the date at the top moves with it.
