Talisker is on the western side of Skye, in Carbost. Portree is the island’s main town and a reasonable base, and the drive between them is about three quarters of an hour when the roads are clear. In July they often are not.
Book the tour before you trust a July diary. The shore and the village are the rest of a Talisker day, and the island is a fine place to sleep.
Uig, north at the ferry, has the Isle of Skye Brewing Co. on the pier. The same pier is the CalMac boat to Harris. The brewery and the crossing are different mornings, and the view is very good while you decide.
Torabhaig is at the south end, on Sleat, near Armadale when the Mallaig boat is running. Raasay is the small ferry from Sconser, and the distillery there makes gin as well as whisky. The golf is at Sconser too, and it is not the same morning as the boat across. Three stills, three mornings. The island has never been in a hurry.
