How to plan a Highlands whisky trip
A base town, one booked visit, and the walk, the brewery, or the round that fills the rest.
Start with the bed. Dufftown, Inverness, Portree, Fort William, Ballater: the town decides what is actually in reach, and the suitcase will thank you for unpacking once.
Then book the visit on the venue’s own site. A brewery counts, if hops are the mood. Summer tours vanish the way a plate of shortbread does. Winter hours shrink, and several Speyside rooms take a quieter week. The date on each page here is the day we last read their site. Worth another look before you set off.
The other half of the day is the walk, the harbour, the forest park, or the spa. A round of golf is a day of its own.
Leave room for weather, single-track roads, and ferries. One visit and one outing survives a late start. Four distilleries in a day is how you meet every sheep in the Highlands and none of the tours.
If the glass is beer, start with the beer guide. If the day is the links, start with a round of golf. The walks, the spas and the chocolate counters are the rest of the day.
